The $800 De Minimis Exemption for International Shipments to the United States

In the United States, there is an $800 threshold under which international shipments are exempt from customs duties. This policy is known as the “de minimis exemption.” This means that shipments with a total value of $800 or less are exempt from customs duties and other taxes upon entry into the U.S.

However, there are several important points to keep in mind:

1. Product Categories

Certain products may be subject to special regulations or additional requirements even if their value is below $800. For example, alcohol, tobacco, and pharmaceuticals might require additional permits.

2. Frequency of Shipments

If there is a high frequency of similar shipments that collectively exceed the $800 threshold, U.S. Customs may scrutinize the shipments and require customs duties, even if each individual shipment meets the de minimis criterion.

3. Countries with Free Trade Agreements

Products originating from countries with free trade agreements (FTAs) with the U.S., such as Israel, may qualify for additional benefits under specific conditions. Israeli products, for instance, are duty-free regardless of the shipment’s value.

It is crucial to familiarize yourself with the relevant regulations and ensure that all necessary documentation, such as commercial invoices and certificates of origin, are prepared and accurate to ensure a smooth customs clearance process.
